Welcome to the Ancoats Canal Project!
We are a group of residents, working in partnership with the Canal and River Trust to make more of the Rochdale and Ashton canals that run through Ancoats into the Northern Quarter. We hold monthly events to clean up the canals, publicise their history and encourage people to use and enjoy them.
2015 began for us with a series of consultation events that form part of longer term plans to link the Ashton and Rochdale Canals via a nature trail. Though the Nature Trail is not the only project we’ve been working on. We have also continued with our work days and social events, and compiled an ACP Wishlist – a number of areas/themes/desires that people have with respect to the Ashton and Rochdale Canals in Ancoats.
In 2016 we have instigated some of the projects put forward in our Nature Trail. Each month we make sure we keep up with our regular activities such as installing and maintaining garden areas, litter picks (always LOTS of litter picking!), tidying up our duck houses, painting, clearing the wash walls and towpaths.
So if you have noticed improvements to the Rochdale Canal environment between Tariff Street and Rodney Street, or the Ashton Canal above Great Ancoats Street that would be us!
To find out more, get in touch, follow us on Twitter, join our Facebook group or come down to our next event! You can read about us in the Manchester Evening News and hear more about the project in an interview on BBC Radio Manchester.
If your organisation would like to get involved or organise your own volunteering day please contact us and we will see what we can do.
We look forward to seeing you soon on the canal!
